World Footprints
World Footprints is a heart-centered Social Impact travel media company where travelers of conscience and culture can come for information, engagement, education, entertainment and inspiration in the travel space. World Footprints is guided by a belief in our common humanity. That principle is expressed in the Zulu word Ubuntu “I am because we are” and Tat tvam asi, a Hindu word that translates “I see the other in myself and myself in others”. The philosophy of unity guides the socially minded stories that are found throughout the World Footprints multimedia platform.

The island of St. Maarten (Sint Maarten) is the common denominator in the stories of two different families whose lives were changed when they landed on the Caribbean island. Join us to hear why St. Maarten was the backdrop to their positive life transformations.
First, we’ll speak to Erik and Emily Orton about their decision to spend a year at sea with their five children. The family of seven spent a year sailing from St. Maarten to New York. The lessons they learned and the adventures they experienced are described in their book, Seven at Sea: Why a New York City Family Cast Off Convention For A Life-Changing Year On A Sailboat. In their book, Erik and Emily remind us that we have the ability to customize our lives, regardless of our perceived constraints.
Then, we’ll introduce travel writer Breana Johnson who lived as an American expat on the island of St. Maarten for a few years. Breana says that anytime you move to a new country you expect that there will be a period of cultural adjustment. However, what Breana didn’t expect was the cultural adjustment she experienced when you returned to the United States. Breana will share how she managed her cultural shocks.

Experience a slice of American history as two journalists share their perspectives on Martha’s Vineyard and parts of the American south.
Author, Bijan Bayne, has been a summer resident of Martha’s Vineyard since childhood. He says that while most people may know about Martha’s Vineyard because of the Obama family and the movie Jaws, the Vineyard has a rich history within the African American community. Bijan tells us that the island is much more than a playground for the rich and famous and his stories will shatter some stereotypical notions many hold about Martha’s Vineyard.
Travel writer Kathleen Walls loves sharing the historical stories she discovers during her travels. Her storytelling is truthful and authentic and she isn’t afraid to share stories about dark episodes in American history like the Trail of Tears or slavery. Kathleen says that often times certain parts of American’s history is overlooked because of shame and guilt, but even those dark episodes can help inform our future.
You can read all of Kathleen Wall’s stories on World Footprints.

First, award-winning travel writer Richard Grant will take us through East Africa and down the Nile River. Despite escaping death in Mexico’s lawless Sierra Madre, an adventure he describes in his adventure classic God’s Middle Finger, Richard’s curiosity and restlessness took him to Africa, where he set off on another adventure-- to find the source of the Nile River. In his newest book, CRAZY RIVER: Exploration and Folly in East Africa, Richard writes that he had trained and prepared for a physical adventure in the wilderness, but his biggest challenges were intellectual.
Then, award-winning author Dianne Ebertt Beeaff shares her transcending book, SPIRIT STONES, a historic exploration that took nearly a decade to complete. Dianne explores the enduring lessons of Western Europe’s prehistoric monoliths, stone circles and burial chambers.
Finally, Joshua Berman offers some insights into Maya culture and events surrounding the end of the Maya calendar on December 21, 2012 in his new guide book MAYA 2012. Joshua has been traveling, living, teaching, and leading trips in Central America since 1998. During his travels he's heard tales about “lost worlds” and Maya pyramids. A predominate story that he encountered is what the Maya have been anticipating—the end of the Long Count, a 5,125-year cycle of the Maya calendar, which will occur on December 21, 2012. Some believe that it will be a peaceful transition while others warn it will be apocalyptic.
