Today’s World Footprints radio show is all about the beautiful island of Bequia (pro-nounced Beck-Way), the northern-most island in the Grenadines. We will traverse as much of the seven square miles as we can during this broadcast. First, we’ll start under the pristine coastal waters of Bequia as we explore some of the best diving spots in the world. We start our underwater adventure with Cathy Sachs from Dive Bequia who takes us to a colorful spot called Devils Table. From there we’ll travel on land to Bequia’s Park Bay, home to the Old Hegg Turtle Sanctuary, where we’ll meet up with a retired, skin-diving fisherman known affectionately as “Brother” King. Brother King has devoted much of his adult life to helping preserve the Hawksbill turtle and protect them from poachers. The story of this “accidental conservationist” is inspiring and educational. Finally, we’ll retire to one of the most scenic and romantic resorts we’ve experienced on any of our travels-the Bequia Beach Hotel. You’ll meet owner Bengt Mortstetd and hear his inspiring story on how he came to establish this unique property on Bequia’s most beautiful beach.

Two-time Academy Award-nominated producer/director Greg MacGillivray brings his latest IMAX film to World Footprints—ARABIA 3D. Narrated by Academy Award-winning actress Helen Mirren, ARABIA 3D is the first major film production filmed entirely in Saudi Arabia. In addition to our conversation with the director, World Footprints went inside the making of ARABIA 3D with principle character Hamzah Jamjoom and film-consultant Robert Lacey.
ARABIA 3D spans 21 centuries of Arabian history, beginning in present-day America, with the dreams of Hamzah Jamjoom, the first-ever Saudi Arabian film student at Chicago’s DePaul University. Historian Robert Lacey, author of The Kingdom (banned from Saudi Arabia) and the just-released update, Inside The Kingdom, served as the film’s consultant.
From the nomads in the desert to young Saudis in the cities, from thrilling Red Sea dives to a poignant spiritual pilgrimage to the holy city of Makkah (Mecca) for Hajj, ARABIA 3D’s journey reveals Arabia in an illuminating new light.
Keeping with our focus on meaningful films, Academy Award-nominated director Robert Bilheimer continues his conversation with World Footprints about his background in theatre and filmmaking, decision to focus on socially conscious messages and his nominated film Cry of Reason.

Join World Footprints as we take you on a journey through a national treasure—the State of Montana. We covered just a small section of this wonderful state—Glacier Country--but as you’ll discover from Part I of this series, there’s a reason why many celebrities (Ted Turner, David Letterman, among others) call Montana a “home away from home.” Our first stop through Glacier country begins in the town of Whitefish, an enchanting art and cultural center, and you’ll meet the proprietors of the Good Medicine Lodge. (One of the most extraordinary places we have ever stayed.) Whitefish is also the gateway to our second stop—Glacier National Park. We will take you deep inside Glacier National Park to share some of its charm with the help of Mike Davies of Glacier Guides. Then we’ll travel by rail on the Amtrak Empire Builder to Havre, Montana, where we’ll experience the Havre Underground, a town beneath the town. Finally, we’ll end the first part of this journey with a stop that takes us on safari (yes, a safari) on the Great Plains with Jacob Dusek of Sage Safaris.

World Footprints is excited to take you on a journey through Colombia, South America where “The Only Risk is Wanting to Stay”. Colombia is home to the 2015 Miss Universe and the country was the featured country in the 2011 Smithsonian Folklife Festival and also had a presence in subsequent Smithsonian Folklife Festivals. World Footprints visited the country and met with some of the artisans and other participants who have been traveling to Washington, DC to share the country's treasures. When some think of Colombia they reflect on Colombia's dark history with drug cartels and corruption. However, we saw a very colorful face of this country--one that reflected it's rich cultural heritage and warmth of the communities we visited. We traveled to historic cities, through the Gold Museum and to Monkey's Island in the Amazon. The memories we left with included the wonderful food, gracious hospitality, architectural and natural beauty. We fell in love with Colombia and we hope that you will also be inspired to visit the country with an open mind and open heart.

This World Footprints show will journey to the Grenadines and unlock the mysteries of the sea in a way few seldom see or experience. The Grenadines are a haven for scuba divers, some of the world’s most spectacular aquatic scenery and much more. Our first stop takes us to Bequia (pronounced Beck-way), the largest of the Grenadines. Fresh from a dive at Devils Table with her dive buddy Cathy Sachs of Dive Bequia, Tonya and Cathy will recount their dive and why Bequia offers an unusual diving experience. Cathy will also share how this island has changed her life. Then we’ll visit Bequia’s Park Bay, home to the Old Hegg Turtle Sanctuary, where a native retired skin-diving fisherman affectionately known as “Brother King”, has spent more than a decade of his life to helping to conserve the endangered hawksbill turtle. Brother King and his helpers monitor the beaches and nests here to protect mother turtles from poachers. They also care for the baby hatchlings in the sanctuary during the turtles’ vulnerable years of life. Many of the hatchlings are released into a protective area just south of Bequia called Tobago Cays—our next stop.
Lesroy Noel is the Park Ranger for the Tobago Cays Marine Park which lies in the southern Grenadines. The area comprises of five isles bordered by a giant horseshoe reef and teems with wildlife and wild sea turtles. Few places on earth can match the unblemished natural beauty, tranquil waters and their ever-changing kaleidoscope of blues, greens and aquamarines. Finally, we’ll travel just a short distance by boat to the private Palm Island where we’ll catch up with the island’s resident artist and (retired) medical professional Dr. Patrick Chevallier. Patrick is one of the world’s premiere undersea artists and his character is as charming and colorful as his artwork. As one of only five underwater painters around the world Patrick captures the beauty of sea life in remarkable detail. We will talk to him about the beginning of Palm Island and his family’s experience as the only permanent year-round resident. To learn more about the beautiful St. Vincent and the Grendines visit their website at www.DiscoverSVG.com.
